BridgePort Networks Adds Members to Telecom Industry's Leading Alliance for Mobile to VoIP Convergence

CHICAGO--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Feb. 9, 2005-- BridgePort Networks, the leader in MobileVoIP convergence, today named new members to its alliance program called MobileIGNITE (Mobile Integrated Go-to-Market Network IP Telephony Experience) which creates an interoperability ecosystem of industry leading organizations that will help service providers to rapidly deploy MobileVoIP convergence services. The new entrants to the program, Commoca, IMC, PCTEL, Sylantro and Tekelec join three earlier announced members, IBM, Airespace, and VeriSign.

The alliance program members will collectively bring a full complement of pre-tested end-to-end hardware and software for network infrastructure and end user devices together with deployment and integration services. They will address service providers' needs to improve the quality, coverage and cost of mobile service delivery. These interoperable solutions will add mobility to fixed VoIP telephony services, and allow end users to seamlessly roam between mobile and VoIP services using a single phone number identity.

"This alliance has formed around BridgePort Networks' open systems approach of integrating existing mobile networks with wired and wireless broadband networks, enabling carriers to choose from a group of highly qualified suppliers for more rapid rollout of Mobile VoIP services," said Mike Mulica, President & CEO, BridgePort Networks. "Carriers can make these choices based on existing open network standards and with full confidence that these MobileVoIP solutions migrate smoothly to an IMS (IP Multimedia Subsystem) network architecture. We welcome Commoca, IMC, PCTEL, Sylantro and Tekelec to MobileIGNITE."

Each new member of the MobileIGNITE alliance brings a specific expertise to the ecosystem:

  • Commoca, a leading developer of value-added SIP based voice-over-IP telephony solutions, helps carriers realize differentiated services and sustainable profitability via patent pending integrated search, contextual based advertising, one-touch calling, no-contact transactions, and mobile user experience portability.
  • International Mobile Communications (IMC) Roaming Service Bureau solution adds VoIP to its existing interoperability services for wireless voice, and data. This triple play convergence platform allows mobile operators and next generation network service providers to offer a seamless solution for interstandard roaming between GSM, CDMA, WiFi and other wireless standards.
  • PCTEL brings its industry-leading, secure, remote connectivity management solutions that incorporate seamless roaming and authentication policy management. PCTEL's Roaming Client and Central Configuration Server have been deployed by many of today's major wireless carriers and service aggregators.
  • Sylantro Systems Corp. provides application feature servers for the hosted communications marketplace. The advanced feature set allows service providers to offer a wide range of high-value business and consumer VoIP services, and a rich suite of applications and development tools allows service providers to roll out new, differentiated services quickly and efficiently.
  • Tekelec develops now and next-generation signaling and switching telecommunications solutions, network performance management technology and value-added applications. Its EAGLE® 5 Signaling Application System is the market leader in its category and its media gateway and media gateway controllers are the market-share leaders for integrated media gateway-softswitch platforms worldwide. Tekelec also is recognized as having the third largest global market share in VoIP switching equipment

"MobileVoIP involves not just mobile terminals, but also fixed VoIP clients, as people prefer to use the best device for a given task," said Jose Melendez, President and CEO of Commoca. "Users will benefit from the enhanced experience afforded by a Commoca-enabled fixed telephony solution that not only provides for advanced functionality, such as converged local search and presence aware mobile roaming, but also enables seamless synchronization of contacts, call logs, and ring music between devices. As part of the MobileIGNITE alliance we are building on SIP standards to provide cost effective solutions for service providers that bridge value-added services between legacy cellular phones and emerging VoIP environments."

"As the provider of roaming services that simplify interstandard and international roaming, IMC can help make global mobile to VoIP roaming a reality," said Blake Swensrun, Chairman and CEO of IMC. "Working in unison with the members of this ecosystem, we will offer carriers a SIP based method to connect their mobile and WiFi networks into our global roaming platform for global government and enterprise subscribers. Subscribers will be able to use a single global number, whether on a mobile cellular network, home, office, hotel or hotspot WiFi network or using fixed VoIP on DSL, cable or enterprise LAN."

"We are enthusiastic about the MobileIGNITE alliance and the future of VoIP," said Marty Singer, PCTEL Chairman and CEO. "PCTEL's Roaming Client enables seamless roaming across wireless networks and VoIP is a natural use and extension of this capability," added Singer.

"Through partnership with industry leaders such as BridgePort Networks, and support of open standards such as SIP, we are able to offer carriers integrated solutions for mobile VoIP services," said Pete Bonee, president and CEO of Sylantro. "As wireless integration with hosted communications services becomes ever more critical to businesses and consumers, we expect our partnership with BridgePort Networks to become a cornerstone in delivery of MobileVoIP."

"Enabling the workforce and consumers with robust MobileVoIP solutions requires a trusted end-to-end infrastructure upon which to deliver services," said Hermon Pon, VP, Corporate Development, Tekelec. "By joining BridgePort Networks' alliance we can leverage our next-generation switching and signaling telecommunications solutions as another element of MobileIGNITE to offer carriers seeking network performance management and value-added applications.

The MobileIGNITE alliance is based on open standards such as the Session Initiation Protocol (SIP) and members share a commitment to a smooth migration to the IP Multimedia System (IMS). This permits program members to offer go-to-market solutions that leverage existing low cost SIP compatible terminals such as softphones, IP phones and analog telephone adapters in combination with legacy cellular phones, as well as supporting the new emerging cellular/WiFi dual mode handsets.
