MobileIGNITE Alliance Showcases MobileVoIP Live! AT 3GSM WORLD CONGRESS 2005

CHICAGO--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Feb. 9, 2005-- Members of the MobileIGNITE (Mobile Integrated Go-to-Market Network IP Telephony Experience) alliance, BridgePort Networks, IBM, IMC, PCTEL and VeriSign, announced that the companies will be showcasing a live MobileVoIP solution for service providers at the 3GSM World Congress 2005. MobileVoIP Live!, the first ever showcase of its kind, features seamless voice roaming between live GSM and WiFi -VoIP networks.

Visitors to 3GSM World Congress 2005 will be able to experience seamless roaming of calls using a single phone with a GSM-based number over both GSM and WiFi broadband networks. As attendees enter an area where the WiFi signal offers a clearer connection, the phone automatically connects to the VoIP network to send and receive calls.

Visitors to MobileIGNITE participating member stands can test MobileVoIP Live! using a GSM/WiFi smartphone with a unified cellular and Session Initiation Protocol (SIP) based VoIP interface to make and receive phone calls. Calls will be made on a live GSM network through roaming relationships provided by International Mobile Communications (IMC) and a wireless LAN network based on Airespace WLAN infrastructure. Media and 3GSM attendees can arrange for a guided tour to all member stands to gain a deeper understanding of what went into making this live market trial possible.

The showcase is the result of the MobileIGNITE interoperability alliance program that brings together MobileVoIP convergence leaders and their intelligent infrastructures to develop highly integrated end-to-end solutions for service providers. MobileVoIP Live! will operate at multiple locations in and around 3GSM World Congress from 14th - 17th February 2005, and demonstrates the real benefits of MobileVoIP solutions.

"The MobileVoIP Live! showcase is a direct result of MobileIGNITE alliance members' efforts to show the power of open standards MobileVoIP solutions," said Mike Mulica, president and CEO, BridgePort Networks. "As an industry, we've talked about the benefits of MobileVoIP convergence, what it means to our customers, to service providers, and financially. MobileVoIP Live! shows the world that the industry is moving from talking to deploying."

MobileIGNITE program members collectively bring a full complement of pre-tested, end-to-end hardware and software for network infrastructure and end-user devices. Combined with deployment and integration services, the program addresses service providers' need to rapidly offer simplified converged services that align with and migrate easily to the IP Multimedia System (IMS).

"MobileVoIP Convergence requires complex integration and interoperability between numerous multi-vendor components," said Robert Chu, Director, Wireless Broadband & Sensing Solutions of IBM Europe. "We have worked with BridgePort Networks and the MobileIGNITE Alliance ecosystem of partners to align these components to the Open Industry Standards that work with IBM's eServer Blade Center technology, resulting in the successful multi-company system integration that is MobileVoIP Live!"

"MobileVoIP is an essential element in VeriSign's suite of IP Convergence services," said Neil McGowan, Senior Vice President, International Operations, VeriSign Communications Services. "As operators embrace the complimentary nature of WiFi and mobile networks, VeriSign will help to enable operators to deploy convergence services that facilitate communications, commerce and deliver content over any device."

  • BridgePort Networks--Enables MobileVoIP convergence through its open standards based NomadicONE Network Convergence Gateway (NCG). The NCG bridges signaling, call control and authentication between the SIP based VoIP world and the SS7 based core mobile network, cost effectively delivering mobile services over VoIP networks and VoIP calls to mobile phones.
  • IBM--Hosts BridgePort Network's NomadicONE Network Convergence Gateway and other VoIP infrastructure on its eServer Blade Center Linux based server technology. Further, service providers will benefit from the best practice offerings developed by IBM Global Services for implementing MobileVoIP convergence solutions.
  • International Mobile Communications (IMC)--MobileVoIP Live! utilizes IMC's roaming platform and Viking Wireless SIM cards through its agreements with French GSM operators and with a roaming connection from the WiFi network to the Viking Wireless Home Location Register and Mobile Switching Center.
  • PCTEL-- Provides the industry leading VoIP-enabled Roaming Client software that allows secure and seamless voice roaming between WiFi and GSM networks. Built on the industry leading WiFi to mobile data Roaming Client platform, PCTEL brings sophisticated roaming policy management and authentication to the MobileVoIP Live! service.
  • VeriSign-- Is an integral part of the MobileIGNITE program, VeriSign is the convergence hub that helps to enable subscribers globally to find, secure, connect and transact globally across multiple networks. The MobileVoIP Live! showcase highlights VeriSign's Signaling System 7(SS7)/IP SIGTRAN connectivity, the global registry and VPN security.

"This is a natural extension of our Roaming Client," said Marty Singer, PCTEL's Chairman and CEO. "We are excited to be part of an alliance that will make VoIP calls part of the wireless Internet experience," added Singer.

"Seamless global roaming can be difficult for large enterprises and government users to implement when they are tasked with negotiating individually with numerous international wireless operators around the world," said Ken Stewart, Vice President Business Development of International Mobile Communications. "The MobileIGNITE alliance will allow IMC to add WiFi voice roaming to its global multi-standard roaming platform for such customers."

The MobileVoIP Live! Service may be seen at the following stands at 3GSM World Congress:

    IBM: Stand C1, Hall 1
