PCTEL Mobility Solutions Group Enhances Flagship Roaming Client Platform with EDGE and UMTS Support

September 1, 2004

CHICAGO, Sep 1, 2004 (BUSINESS WIRE) -- PCTEL, Inc. (NASDAQ:PCTI), a global leader in simplifying mobility, announced today that its Mobility Solutions Group has released the latest version of its Roaming Client. This new release now includes support for 3G standards and networks, such as EDGE and UMTS.

"Our new Roaming Client enables carriers to simplify and manage the consumer's mobile data experience," said Marty Singer, Chairman and CEO of PCTEL. "The rapid deployment of 3G networks that co-exist with GPRS and Wi-Fi creates a need for software that permits users to connect to the Internet over multiple wireless networks. Our Roaming Client accomplishes that while permitting carriers to manage preferences, policy and information via our Central Configuration Server," added Singer.

PCTEL's Roaming Client allows users to establish EDGE or UMTS data sessions through compatible cellular phones or PC card modems. When using a mobile phone, the user has the option of transmitting data through the phone over Bluetooth, Infrared, or USB cable connections. The Roaming Client enables users to always connect to the fastest and most cost-effective network any time and in almost any location. The Roaming Client can automatically locate and connect to preferred data services and transition the user to better connectivity options as they become available. For example, if a user drives out of UMTS coverage, the PCTEL Roaming Client will automatically attempt to reconnect the user to an available GPRS network. Also, the network provider or end-user can define and manage the preferences for the automatic connection to wide area (GPRS/EDGE/UMTS) or Wi-Fi networks.

In addition, the PCTEL Roaming Client now features a smart "Device Installation Wizard." This component simplifies network operators' introduction of additional devices and device drivers to the market. During the initial connection to the wireless network, PCTEL's Device Installation Wizard automatically recognizes compatible hardware and installs the appropriate drivers. This takes place for both phones and PC card modems. Wireless carriers are embracing this capability as an efficient way to reduce operating costs, because this feature enables them to ship a single piece of software that supports all the devices on the network.

PCTEL's GPRS/EDGE /UMTS and Wi-Fi supported Roaming Client is now shipping with AT&T Wireless EDGE PC Card modems.

PCTEL's Roaming Client provides mobile users secure, seamless access and roaming capabilities across Wi-Fi and cellular data networks. The Roaming Client enables rapid scanning of available networks and a user-friendly connection process. The client has also been bundled with 802.11 chipsets and licensed to major carriers within and outside the U.S.
