PCTEL Ships HSP Modem For New Notebook Models

PCTEL Ships HSP Modem For New Notebook Models MILPITAS, Calif. – December 12, 2001 – PCTEL Inc. (Nasdaq: PCTI), a leading provider of soft modem and Internet access technology, confirmed that the company has been shipping its MicroModem to Dell Computer Corporation. The PCTEL modem is a 12.15-cm2 card - a MicroModem - that exploits PCTEL's patented Host Signal Processing (HSP) technology. PCTEL designed this modem for integration into the new Latitude and Inspiron notebooks.

“It is a great privilege to supply our modem technology to Dell,” said Marty Singer, CEO and Chairman of PCTEL. “We believe that we have set a new standard of product excellence with our MicroModem and we will back that product with best-in-class support.”

The PCT2304WT MicroModem is a software based modem design that incorporates a silicon DAA from PCTEL's strategic supplier, Silicon Laboratories Inc. The design eliminates the need for a costly relay and opto-isolators that are typically used in discrete component DAA modem implementations. By utilizing only 15 percent of the power required by a hardware-based PC card modem, a software-based modem conserves a notebook’s battery power, providing consumers much longer computer usage time before recharging. Coupled with its very small (4.5 x 2.7 cm) Modem Daughter Card (MDC) form factor, the PCT2304WT offers a highly reliable and cost-effective modem solution.
