PCTEL’s World MicroModemTM Obtains Microsoft’s® Windows® Hardware Quality Lab Certification Milpitas, CA – February 6, 2001 – PCTEL, Inc. (NASDAQ: PCTI), the leading provider of personal connectivity and Internet access technology, today announced that its HSP56K Communications Network Riser (CNR) reference design for AC97-based PCI has met Microsoft’s strict Windows® Hardware Quality Labs (WHQL) Logo standards. The qualification ensures compatibility with Windows ME, Windows 98 and Windows 2000 Professional operating systems.

PCTEL’s CNR reference design is based on the company’s PCT2303W World MicroModem solution and is one of the first software-based modems to receive Logo standards qualification from Microsoft. The CNR reference design offers OEMs a cost-effective, highly integrated riser solution that is also compact and requires very little power to operate. The certification will allow PCTEL’s OEM customers to use the Windows logo in their packaging and advertising.

“PCTEL’s products are designed to ensure improved Windows hardware and driver quality, increased end user satisfaction and reduced support costs,” said Mark Wilson, PCTEL’s vice president of marketing. “The CNR specification provides an integrated modem/network interface into a single-card solution that plugs directly onto a motherboard, enabling PC OEMs to continue their trend of higher functional integration for desktop computers.”

The WHQL logo, synonymous with quality, indicates compatibility for a product installed and used under the Windows platform. Major PC OEMs generally require Microsoft certification for their product offerings, and certification is a key feature consumers look for when selecting desktop and notebook computers. PCTEL is listed on the Microsoft Windows Hardware Compatibility List (HCL) Web page at www.microsoft.com/hcl/default.asp.
