PCTEL Announces New Wi-Fi(TM) Gateway Platform

MUNICH, Germany, Nov 5, 2002 /PRNewswire-FirstCall via COMTEX/ -- PCTEL, Inc. (Nasdaq: PCTI), a leading provider of Internet access products and wireless mobility software announced today the availability of its new Segue(TM) Network Gateway. PCTEL's Segue(TM) Network Gateway performs all of the routing, IP addressing, security, and billing access required in 802.11 networks. The product, with a list price of $2500, permits Wireless Internet Service Providers (WISPs) and cellular carriers to inexpensively establish a footprint in 802.11 "hot spots" or enterprise environments. PCTEL will be demonstrating its new Segue(TM) Network Gateway in addition to its existing portfolio of Wi-Fi hardware and software solutions in booth #105 at the 802.11 Planet Wireless Conference and Expo, November 5th and 6th in Munich, Germany.

PCTEL offers four innovative mobility software products. Its Segue(TM) Installer and Segue(TM) Roaming Client simplify Wi-Fi network interface card installation and enable roaming between different 802.11 environments, as well as between WLANs and cellular networks such as CDMA 1xRTT and GPRS. The company also offers cost-effective authentication, authorization and accounting with its Segue(TM) Controller solution that handles all of the billing requirements of (WISPs), cellular carriers and niche vendors.

"We will continue to press the envelope on reducing the costs of operating and establishing 802.11 networks," said Marty Singer, PCTEL's Chairman and CEO. "We believe that the industry must confront four barriers to 802.11 growth: network availability, ease-of-use, roaming, and simplified billing. The Segue(TM) Network Gateway, by aggressively attacking the costs of operation and deployment, will help to accelerate the build-out of Wi-Fi networks."

The PCTEL RADIUS-compatible Segue(TM) Network Gateway performs several critical functions for both the mobile subscriber and the service provider. At the most basic level it serves as a router. In its routing capacity, the Segue(TM) Network Gateway aggregates all of the traffic from a Wireless Local Area Network (WLAN). Among other important functions, the Gateway and the Controller (1) attempt to verify that users are authorized to be on the network; (2) ensures that authorized users have valid IP addresses; and (3) connects to a system that maintains subscriber information and that can perform billing operations. Such systems are generically referred to as AAA Brokers because they perform Authorization, Authentication, and Accounting. The PCTEL Segue(TM) Network Controller serves as a centralized location, responsible for serving customized subscriber and location sensitive contents to users of the network.

About WLANs

A Wireless Local Area Network (WLAN) supplies high-speed connectivity to a group of computers in close proximity. This allows any person with a WLAN interface card to benefit from high-speed wireless connectivity within a 300-foot radius of the network base. Currently, WLAN service is based on 802.11b technology, known as Wi-Fi, which boasts speeds up to 11 megabits per second. Wi-Fi access has quickly gained popularity on corporate campuses and in heavily trafficked areas -- known as "hot spots," such as airports, hotels, conference centers and coffee shops, where businesspeople often stop to connect to the office.
