PCTEL Sues Agere, Broadcom, Lucent and U.S. Robotics for Patent Infringement CHICAGO, May 27, 2003 (BUSINESS WIRE) --

PCTEL, Inc. (Nasdaq:PCTI), a leading provider of Internet access technology, 802.11 mobility software, and software-defined radio products, announced today that it has filed patent infringement lawsuits against modem manufacturers Agere Systems Inc. (NYSE: AGR.A - AGR.B), Broadcom Corporation (Nasdaq: BRCM), Lucent Technologies Inc. (NYSE: LU) and U.S. Robotics Corporation. The complaints were filed on May 23, 2003 in the Northern District of California, asserting that these companies have infringed modem technology developed or acquired by PCTEL.

PCTEL had previously filed a complaint against 3COM Corporation (Nasdaq:COMS) for infringing PCTEL modem technology. That complaint was filed in March, 2003.

"We enter litigation reluctantly, but with an absolute conviction that our claims are justified and that we are entitled to substantial compensation," said Marty Singer, PCTEL chairman and CEO. "As has been our practice, we attempted to resolve these matters without recourse to the courts', however, experience has convinced us that litigation offers the most effective path to a meaningful resolution," added Singer.

PCTEL currently focuses on wireless products, in particular, Wi-Fi software, software defined radios and wireless test and measurement tools. Over the past 12 months, the company acquired both a software company and a wireless test and measurement company in its efforts to transition the company to markets that offer higher growth opportunities.

PCTEL recently divested its modem product line to a competitor and industry leader, Conexant Systems, Inc (Nasdaq: CNXT). In addition to cash consideration, Conexant granted PCTEL ownership of approximately 50 modem related patents. PCTEL has previously licensed its own technology to other industry participants in the modem space. PCTEL's enhanced intellectual property is what remains of the company's investment in modem technology and products.
