PCTEL's Segue Roaming Client Boosts Wi-Fi Security with 802.1x and "Wi-Fi Protected Access"

September 29, 2003

CHICAGO, Sep 29, 2003 (BUSINESS WIRE) --

PCTEL, Inc. (Nasdaq:PCTI), a leading provider of wireless solutions and access technology, today announced the immediate availability of its Segue™ Roaming Client software with full support for 802.1x secure authentication and the Wi-Fi Protected Access (WPA) encryption standard. PCTEL will demonstrate its secure version of the Segue™ Roaming Client at the Wi-Fi Planet conference and expo in Munich, Germany (September 29 - 30).

The Segue™ Roaming Client provides mobile users secure, seamless access and roaming capabilities for Wi-Fi networks and cellular data networks in public areas, at the office, and in the home. The Roaming Client enables rapid scanning of available networks and a user-friendly connection process.

WPA is a new, Wi-Fi Alliance mandated security mechanism that eliminates security holes in previous encryption efforts. WPA also protects users and networks from malicious attacks. The 802.1x standard is a framework for secure, mutual authentication between a network and end-users that prevents unsuspecting parties from transmitting information between each other. Many enterprises currently support 802.1x to protect their wireless networks.

"Security and ease-of-use continue to represent barriers to the inevitable Wi-Fi explosion," said Marty Singer, PCTEL's Chairman and CEO. "The combination of the Segue™ Roaming Client's user interface and facilities with the WPA and 802.1x security enhancements will accelerate business use of Wi-Fi networks," added Singer.

PCTEL's secure version of the Segue™ Roaming Client is now available via its website at www.pctel.com and as a customized offering to equipment providers, carriers, and other service providers. The Segue™ Roaming Client supports both WPA and non-WPA modes of operation and can be effective in migrating users to WPA in mixed use environments. The Segue™ Roaming Client can also leverage the backend administrative capabilities of the Segue™ Central Configuration Server (CCS) to allow detailed control and update of users' wireless configuration from a central location.

The Segue™ Roaming Client is compatible with Microsoft Windows® 98 (Second Edition), Windows ME, Windows 2000, and Windows XP. WPA functionality is integrated into Windows 2000 and Windows XP. Future versions will provide WPA support for Windows 98 and Windows ME. In addition, more than 80 Wi-Fi adapters are certified for compatibility with the Roaming Client software.
